Recommended Routers and Bridges

You must have a router to use the Slingbox. If your Slingbox is not within Ethernet cable reach of your router, you can also try using wall-plug Ethernet bridges (also known as Powerline or HomePlug) or a wireless bridge. See below for details.

Routers

To view your Slingbox remotely, your router needs to provide access to your Slingbox from outside of your home network. It uses a technology called UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) to automatically set up your router. Many routers use this same technology to make setup easy. You can manually configure your router if UPnP does not work using the port forwarding tool available during the installation of the SlingPlayer software.

The following routers have been tested and work well with the Slingbox. They all have UPnP on by default. You may also find that other routers work just fine. If your router isn't listed, it doesn't mean that it won't work well with the Slingbox! These are just a few that we've had a chance to test ourselves.

Wall-plug bridges

These devices use your existing in-home electrical outlets to connect the Slingbox to your network. The following wall-plug bridge solution has been tested and works well with the Slingbox. You’ll need two bridges: connect one to your Slingbox and the other to your router.

  • SlingLink
  • NETGEAR XE102

Wireless bridges

The following wireless bridges have been tested and work well with the Slingbox:

  • NETGEAR WGE111
  • Linksys WET54G
  • Linksys WET54GS5
  • Linksys WGA54G
  • SMC 2870W
  • US Robotics 5430

These wireless bridges do not work reliably with the Slingbox:

  • D-Link DWL-810
  • D-Link DWL-810+
  • D-Link DWL-G820
  • D-Link DGL-3420
  • Linksys WET11
  • Microsoft Xbox MN-740
