Restoring your Slingbox to factory settings

Certain situations may require you to restore your Slingbox to factory settings. The most common reasons are:

  • You replace the router to which you originally connected your Slingbox. In this case, the Slingbox was set up to work with your original router and now needs a new IP address from your new router.
  • You purchased a previously owned Slingbox that still has its old settings in place.
  • You forgot your Slingbox passwords. In this case, factory resetting allows you to start fresh and set the initial passwords.

One of the most common symptoms that indicate you have a problem requiring a factory reset is if both LEDs on the front of your Slingbox are lit and not flashing but you still cannot see your Slingbox in SlingPlayer or the Configuration Wizard/Setup Assistant.  Either you don’t see your Slingbox in the Slingbox directory or the Setup Assistant says "Slingbox not found!"

Important note: Once you've installed the SlingPlayer 1.5 software or later, resetting your Slingbox will not return it to an earlier version of the Slingbox Software.

Slingbox has an old IP address

Essentially what’s going on is the Slingbox was operating with a different router setup... so it already has an IP address it. Now, however, with the new router, the IP address the Slingbox was previously using is no longer valid and unfortunately, it can not communicate with your new router.

And if you forgot your passwords, well... we don’t need to tell you what happened there!

What to do

Note: You must be on your home network and physically able to access the Slingbox to perform a factory reset.

With your Slingbox powered on, press and hold the Reset button on the back of the Slingbox for five seconds. When you see the lights on the front of the Slingbox quickly flash from left to right, and then flash slowly, you can release the button. The Slingbox is now reset.

Once reset, the Power light stays on without flashing. If your Slingbox is connected to your router, the Network light will also go on when it receives an IP address.

Note: If you have made firmware upgrades, be aware that SlingPlayer will ask you to make those upgrades again.
