Can't find your Slingbox on the network in Windows XP and XP/SP1?

Here's the situation. You've just hooked up your new Slingbox. You install the software and are just so excited to start watching TV while you're pretending to work. You launch the application and-wait a minute-your Slingbox isnt showing up in the Slingbox Directory!

If your computer is running one of the operating systems below, the problem is most likely in the firewall settings on your computer. The affected operating systems are:

  • Windows XP Home
  • Windows XP Professional
  • Windows XP Home Service Pack 1
  • Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1

If the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) is enabled on any of those operating systems, the Slingbox will not be visible on your home network and won't show up in the Slingbox Directory in the SlingPlayer. The ICF is set under the Advanced tab of the Local Area Connection Properties window. To check if this is your issue:

  1. Go to: Start -> Connect To... -> Show All Connections
  2. Right-click on your LAN connection
  3. Click on the Advanced tab. It should look something like this

The best way to resolve this issue is to update your system to Windows XP Service Pack 2. See your Windows documentation for how to install Service pack updates from Microsoft.

If you don't want to update to the latest version of Windows XP, you can try disabling the firewall.
