More SlingLink troubleshooting

This article covers some of the more complex reasons why the SlingLink and SlingLink TURBO may not work as expected in some homes. Most of the time, the SlingLink works without a problem. If there are problems, it’s usually due to a loose ethernet connection, an outlet not being switched on, or a SlingLink being plugged into a power strip.

If you are just starting to troubleshoot your difficulties, please be sure to see the A guide to SlingLink Troubleshooting article in the Related Items section of this page.

same-outlet.jpgBefore we make any assumptions about whether or not the wiring in your home is the reason that the SlingLink or SlingLink TURBO isn't working, we should make sure that there are not any problems with your SlingLinks. Check the SlingLinks by plugging them both into the same power outlet. Plug one SlingLink into the top outlet and the other into the bottom outlet.linklight.jpg

Does the link light on both units turn on? The link light is the middle light on the front of the SlingLink. On the SlingLink TURBO, it looks like the image on the right.

If the SlingLinks are OK, try plugging them into two different outlets. If they work, they are communicating normally as shown below.

If they fail, the power outlets in your home may be divided into separate phases. This means that you may have two or more independent power lines coming into your home, with some outlets on one phase and other outlets on another. If your power outlets are divided between multiple phases, you may need to try your SlingLinks on several outlets to find the outlets that share the same phase.

Typically, there’s no obvious way to tell if the outlets in your home all come from the same phase, even when you look at the circuit breakers or fuse box. Your house may have a separate circuit breaker or fuse for each room but if the power comes from the same supply line, SlingLinks will work. If the power comes from split or multiple supply lines, SlingLinks may not work.

Of course, if you have questions about the wiring in your house you should contact a qualified electrician.
