Wait until you're home before updating Slingbox Software

If you're away from home, and SlingPlayer prompts you to update the Slingbox Software (also known as "firmware") for your Slingbox, here's the best thing to do: wait until you're back within your home network before performing this update.

Note that versions 2.0 and 2.0.1 of SlingPlayer for Windows may not warn you to wait until you get home. If you try to update the Software remotely, your Slingbox may end up in a state that requires that your Slingbox be physically reset by pressing the button on the back of it. We’re looking into this issue and we hope to have a resolution soon.

Why should I wait?

It's just a matter of playing it safe. Updating Slingbox Software from outside your home network can work fine. However, if something goes wrong, while it's not the end of the world ... your Slingbox isn't ruined or anything ... it does need to be reset. If you're away, then someone at home must press the Reset button on the back of the Slingbox for you. If there's no one home to do that, then you won't be able to use your Slingbox until you get back home and can reset it yourself.

So, to the usual advice "keep your Slingbox Software up-to-date!" you can add"if you're within your home network." It's okay to wait until you're home before performing the update.

Do I lose anything by not updating my Slingbox Software immediately?

It depends on the update. It's possible that some features might not work as expected. But you'll be able to connect, and basic functions (such as streaming)should continue to work.

Updating Slingbox Software once you get home

When you're back, to update the Slingbox Software, just launch SlingPlayer. If there's a Slingbox on your home network that needs updating, SlingPlayer reminds you each time you launch it. You can also trigger the update manually, using the Slingbox Setup Assistant:

  1. Launch SlingPlayer. You don't need to be connected to a Slingbox.
  2. Choose Setup Assistant from the Settings menu.
    The Setup Assistant appears.
  3. Click Next.
  4. If you have more than one Slingbox, select the one that you want to update.
  5. Enter the Administrator password for the Slingbox that you want to update, then click Next.
  6. From the Edit Settings links on the left side of the Setup Assistant window, click Software Update.
  7. Follow the onscreen instructions to update the Slingbox Software for your Slingbox.
