What's in the SlingCatcher December 2008 Software Update?

Sling Media has released software updates for the suite of SlingCatcher applications. These updates include updated SlingCatcher software and a new version of the SlingCatcher Desktop software. The SlingCatcher Desktop software includes a new version of SlingProjector, and a BETA release of the SlingSync software.

Here's how to install these updates:
  • SlingCatcher Software Updates:
On your TV screen, go to the Settings menu and select Software Updates.  Then select Check for Updates.  If SlingCatcher says updates are available, click Yes to install them.  If no updates are available, your SlingCatcher is already up to date.

  • SlingCatcher Desktop Software (SlingProjector and SlingSync):
If you have previously installed SlingProjector on your PC, start the application and click Check for Updates from the menu.  If you have not installed the software previously, click the Downloads tab at the top of this page.

What's in these updates?

SlingPlayer for TV:

  • Improved, more reliable streaming from remote Slingboxes to SlingCatcher and PCs.
  • Now remembers the resolution settings from each Slingbox: Just set the Slingbox resolution from the Advanced menu for the remote Slingbox. SlingCatcher will remember that resolution the next time it connects to that particular Slingbox.
  • Better integration with Sling Accounts.
My Media
  • New folder playback feature: If you press the Play button while a folder is highlighted, SlingCatcher will play back the files in that folder in sequence. Pressing the Skip+ button moves to the next file. Files are played back in the order of the sort option that is selected with the MODE button.
  • Improved USB drive support:
  • Better compatibility with more USB drives.
  • Drives will now spin down after two minutes when SlingCatcher power is turned off (Note: Not all USB hard drives support this feature).
  • Faster drive scanning. Scanning speed is significantly increased, in particular for large libraries of MP3 and AAC audio files.
  • A variety of enhancements that improve the stability and performance of My Media.
SlingSync BETA
  • SlingSync BETA is a simple application that makes it easy to enjoy your audio/video files on your SlingCatcher. This is the first public beta release of the application. (Note: As with all BETA software, it may contain bugs. You should make sure that you have backups of your multimedia files before working with SlingSync BETA.)
  • Key features of SlingSync:
  • It scans your disk(s) for multimedia content.
  • It checks the multimedia files for compatibility with the SlingCatcher.
  • It allows you to convert most of the multimedia content that you select into the format that the SlingCatcher requires.
  • It helps you transfer your multimedia files to a USB 2.0 hard drive or thumb-drive, which you can then connect to your SlingCatcher for viewing.
SlingProjector
  • 64-bit Windows Vista and 64-bit Windows XP are now supported.
  • Performance profiles: SlingProjector will now automatically adjust its performance based on your PC system’s capabilities. The new performance settings are available in the Settings menu, under the Performance tab.
  • A new 1280x720 full screen mode: SlingProjector now streams at a resolution of 1280x720 to SlingCatcher when Project entire screen mode is selected. Picture quality is greatly increased for this mode as a result.  For best results, you should set your PC’s display resolution to 1280x720 when using this mode. Streaming video quality is improved for the Project window mode.
  • New features in the Settings menu Option tab are available, allowing you to keep your PC audio on while projecting. It also allows you to turn of the computer display or shut the lid of the computer while projecting.
  • You can now use the SlingCatcher remote control to send mouse/keyboard commands to the PC: OK (left mouse click) and Enter (Enter key click). This can be used to control some applications on the PC via your SlingCatcher remote control.
