Help manually adding a Slingbox to SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry when you don't have a Sling Account

I want to connect to my Slingbox using SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry. SlingPlayer asks me to log into my "Sling Account." What's that? What do I do?

You may not be familiar with Sling Accounts if you:

  • are a Mac OS computer user
  • live outside the United States or Canada

Sling Accounts are a free feature, offered in SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows, that keeps track of all of your Sling Media info, such as your Slingbox ID number(s), Slingbox passwords, and your Favorites lists. By letting your Sling Account save all this info for you, it's even easier to connect to your Slingbox, no matter what computer or handheld you're using. SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry is designed to use your Sling Account info so you can connect right away.

However, if you aren't using SlingPlayer 2.0 for Windows within the U.S. or Canada, then the Mobile Favorites feature isn't yet available to you. Still, you can manually create a Sling Account for your Slingbox(es), so you don't have to enter your Slingbox info manually into SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry.

To create a Sling Account on the web (do this while you're at home so you can find your Slingbox ID):

  1. First, find your Slingbox ID:
    1. If you have a Mac, go to the Window menu in SlingPlayer and select Slingbox Directory.
    2. If you're on Windows, go to the Connect menu in SlingPlayer and select Slingbox Directory.
  2. On either platform, select your Slingbox, then click Edit.
The window that opens contains your Slingbox ID.
  3. Go to http://slingaccounts.slingmedia.com.
  4. Follow the instructions to create a new Sling Account. When prompted, use the Slingbox ID that you just discovered to complete your account data.

Once you've done this, you can log into your new Sling Account from SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry.

If you prefer not to create a Sling Account, you don't have to. You can enter your Slingbox ID into SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry manually.

Entering your Slingbox info manually:

  1. First, use SlingPlayer and your computer to find your Slingbox ID:
  3. Using SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry, go to Directory in the Control Ribbon. The Slingbox Directory appears.
  4. Press the BlackBerry Menu button, then select Add. The Add Slingbox screen appears. Note: if pressing the BlackBerry Menu button produces several options, but Add is not one of them, make sure that you're not already logged into a Sling Account. You can't add a Slingbox manually if you're logged into a Sling Account within SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry.
  5. In the Add Slingbox window, enter the info as specified. (Enter the Slingbox ID in the field that says Finder ID.) DO NOT use dashes for the Slingbox ID.
  6. When you're done, exit from the Add Slingbox window and choose Save.

Even after you enter your Slingbox manually, unfortunately you still will not have access to the Mobile Favorites feature. We're working hard to make SlingPlayer 2.0 available in Europe and for Mac users, at which time you'll have full access to all of these features.
